How to recognize Macedonian
Macedonian is one of 8 languages in Grafle's Cyrillic group. Here's what it looks like, where you'll see it on signs, and how to tell it apart from its lookalikes.
Spot it fast
- Like Serbian (both use the Latin-looking ј) but with its own ѓ, ќ and ѕ.
What Macedonian looks like
Сите човечки суштества се раѓаат слободни и еднакви.
Скопје е главен град на Македонија.
Секој е ковач на својата среќа.
Cyrillic scripts: Look for reversed-looking letters like я and и, plus shapes like ж, д, б, ч.
Where you'll see it on signs
- Macedonia
Easy to confuse with
- Serbian — Twins — both write the Latin-looking ј. Watch for Macedonian's own ѓ, ќ, ѕ versus Serbian's ђ, ћ, џ.
- Bulgarian — Macedonian has ј (plus ѓ and ќ); Bulgarian has none of those and uses ъ as a vowel.
