Czech vs Slovak

Czech and Slovak sit in the same corner of the writing-system map — Grafle's Latin group — and players mix them up constantly. Here's the fastest way to tell them apart.

The tell

Slovak's own letters are ľ and ô; Czech's are ř, ě and ů. The ř is uniquely Czech.

Side by side

Czech

Všichni lidé rodí se svobodní a sobě rovní co do důstojnosti.

Ahoj, jak se máš? Děkuji, dobře.

Kdo šetří, má za tři.

Czech's own tells

  • Háčeks everywhere (š, ě, ř) — and ř plus ů (ring) are uniquely Czech.

Všetci ľudia sa rodia slobodní a rovní v dôstojnosti a právach.

Dobrý deň, veľmi ma teší!

Aj kôň má štyri nohy, a predsa sa potkne.

Slovak's own tells

  • Like Czech but with ľ and the circumflex ô (plus ä, ĺ) — and never Czech's ř or ů.
