How to recognize Hebrew
Hebrew is one of 6 languages in Grafle's Independent Scripts group. Here's what it looks like, where you'll see it on signs, and how to tell it apart from its lookalikes.
Spot it fast
- Right-to-left like Arabic, but square, blocky letters that stand apart instead of connecting.
What Hebrew looks like
כל בני האדם נולדו בני חורין ושווים בערכם.
שלום, מה שלומך היום?
המים הם מקור החיים.
Independent Scripts scripts: One-of-a-kind alphabets that fit no larger family: Greek, Hebrew, Georgian, Armenian, Ethiopic, Thaana.
Where you'll see it on signs
- Israel
Easy to confuse with
- Maldivian (Thaana) — Both right-to-left — Hebrew is square and blocky; Thaana looks like slanted slashes with vowel marks on every letter.
- Greek — Greek reads left-to-right with α, ε, ι everywhere; Hebrew reads right-to-left with square, separate letters.
