How to recognize Tamil

Spot it fast
- Chunky, squarish-round letters with strong angles — ற, க and ம are distinctive.
- Fewer curly loops than Malayalam, no top bar.

Easy to confuse with
- Malayalam — Malayalam is far curlier — loops inside loops; Tamil is chunkier with strong straight angles.
- Sinhala — Sinhala is plump and spiral-round; Tamil is squarer with bold angles and corners.
- Telugu — Telugu is round with check-mark ticks on top; Tamil is chunkier, more angular, no ticks.
