Azerbaijani vs Uzbek

Azerbaijani and Uzbek sit in the same corner of the writing-system map — Grafle's Latin group — and players mix them up constantly. Here's the fastest way to tell them apart.

The tell

Uzbek Latin uses apostrophe letters o'/g' and no special vowels; Azerbaijani is full of ə.

Salam, necəsən?

Azərbaycan dili çox gözəldir.

Azerbaijani's own tells

  • The schwa ə mid-word is the instant tell — otherwise it looks Turkish, though it also writes q and x, which Turkish never does.
