How to recognize Uzbek

Uzbek is one of 35 languages in Grafle's Latin group. Here's what it looks like, where you'll see it on signs, and how to tell it apart from its lookalikes.

Spot it fast

Apostrophe letters o' and g' (bo'lib, tug'iladi) are uniquely Uzbek Latin.
Uses q freely but no ö/ü/ə.

What Uzbek looks like

Barcha odamlar erkin, qadr-qimmat va huquqlarda teng bo'lib tug'iladi.

Salom, qalaysiz? Hammasi yaxshimi, do'stim?

O'zbek tili go'zal tildir.

Uzbekistan

Easy to confuse with

Azerbaijani — Uzbek Latin uses apostrophe letters o'/g' and no special vowels; Azerbaijani is full of ə.
Turkish — Uzbek has o'/g' apostrophe letters and uses q freely; Turkish has ğ, ş and dotless ı but never q.
Turkmen — Uzbek: apostrophes (o', g'). Turkmen: ý, ň, ä diacritics. Both Central Asian Turkic.
