How to recognize Azerbaijani
Azerbaijani is one of 35 languages in Grafle's Latin group. Here's what it looks like, where you'll see it on signs, and how to tell it apart from its lookalikes.
Spot it fast
- The schwa ə mid-word is the instant tell — otherwise it looks Turkish, though it also writes q and x, which Turkish never does.

Where you'll see it on signs
- Azerbaijan
Easy to confuse with
- Turkish — The schwa ə is Azerbaijani's signature — Turkish never uses it. Azerbaijani also writes q and x, which Turkish's alphabet lacks.
- Uzbek — Uzbek Latin uses apostrophe letters o'/g' and no special vowels; Azerbaijani is full of ə.
